«Music is our passion. Strong melodies, colorful harmonies, pearly improvisations: Popjazz. And we believe thath the music of the 1980ies is one of the best. That's why we try to adobt it to our way of telling musical stories.

(E) When prehistoric humans discovered the use of fire, their lives changed in many ways. Fire provided them with means to stay warm and dry, cook and to ward of wild animals.
But more than that, fire brought light to the night and enabled an important new social ritual: humans gathering around a fire to exchange stories. Stories would revolve around daily tasks, the successes and trials of the hunt, children, torrential rains and freezing cold winter days or perhaps the elders' tales of days long gone.
Given early humans' precarious struggle for survival, their storytelling surely touched on that which is strongly felt as well: looming dangers, fears, enmity, and sickness – or experiencing love, hate, birth and death. What is certain is that this exchanging of stories served to build trust, strengthen communal ties and the survival of the group.
The first Catmosphere rehearsal in 2017 did not see us huddled around a crackling fire, but rather comfortably seated around a wooden dining room table in the cozy confines of our vocalist Cathryn's home. This gave birth to a ritual that we follow to this day: Before the conversation of musical notes starts, there is a lively exchange of stories – about musical projects, upcoming performances, vacation plans as well as – and most of all about romantic entanglements, finding love, hopes, marriage, and children. And about the other side of the coin: health crises, struggles, loss, pain und sadness. We get to share many laughs – but have also experienced moments of grief, tears and consolation together. The twelve compositions on «Smiles & Tears» represent a collection of these stories and the best way we know how to share them. They are our personal stories, stories about joy and sadness, holding on and letting go. About living life…
(D) Als vor langer Zeit die Menschen das Feuer zu nutzen lernten, veränderte sich ihr Leben in vielerlei Hinsicht. Nicht nur konnten sie nun wilde Tiere fern halten, sich wärmen, Speisen kochen und ihre Kleidung trocknen.
Nein, es ermöglichte ihnen bei Dunkelheit auch ein neues, wichtiges soziales Element: Die Menschen kamen zusammen, um in der Gemeinschaft ums Feuer zu sitzen. Sie tauschten sich aus und erzählten sich Geschichten aus dem Alltag, vom erfolgreichen Jagen und Angeln, von ihren Kindern, von kalten Regen- und harten Wintertagen oder man lauschte vielleicht den Anekdoten der Älteren aus vergangenen Zeiten.
Mit Sicherheit erzählten sie sich aber auch Bewegendes: von drohenden Gefahren, Ängsten, Feindschaft und Krankheit - oder vom Erleben von Hass, Liebe, Geburt und Tod.
So oder so: Dieser Austausch förderte das Vertrauen ins Gegenüber, stärkte die Zusammenarbeit und diente zum Überleben der Gemeinschaft. Wir vier von Catmosphere sassen zwar an der allerersten Probe 2017 nicht um ein knisterndes Feuer, sondern an einem grossen Holztisch in einer geheizten Stube. Damit begann ein Ritual, das wir seit Gründung von Catmosphere pflegen: Immer bevor jeweils die ersten Töne gespielt werden, tauschen wir uns ausführlich aus - über laufende Bandprojekte, bevorstehende Konzerte, Ferienpläne, aber auch - und vor allem - über neu aufkeimende Lieben, Hoffnungen, Heirat, Kinderpläne. Und über Krankheit, Scheitern, Schmerz, Trauer sowie Verlust. Manchmal lachen wir zusammen - aber es gibt auch immer wieder Momente der Tränen. Auf «Smiles & Tears» erzählen wir diese Geschichten, verpackt in zwölf Kompositionen. Es sind dies unsere persönlichen Geschichten. Sie handeln von Freude und Trauer. Vom Erhalten und Loslassen. Vom Leben halt...
